Against strong international
competition, Enclosure Solutions has
won a substantial contract from the BBC to supply 347 racks of 36U,
42U and 47U heights as part of the complete refurbishment of their
flagship Broadcasting House site.
The New Broadcasting House development is a ten-year long project,
involving the refurbishment and modernisation of the original 1932
Broadcasting House for BBC Network Radio, followed by a new extension
to house BBC World Service and BBC News. Though 350 cabinets were

TV and IT Departments were subsequently also ordered. However, it
was determined that the differing needs of the three applications
could be satisfied by variants of the core platform, Enclosure Solutions
IMRAK 1400, whose design and accessories enable a virtually limitless
variety of configurations.
Key engineering issues included the requirement for optimum cable
space behind equipment; and, owing to its specialised nature, the
ability to ground together or isolate individual cabinets in a bayed
suite. A cabinet depth of 1000mm was required to accept IT Department
servers and, unlike the Broadcast cabinets which are normally

front and rear, thermal management considerations required fully
ventilated doors in either single or twin "wardrobe" style.
The doors can be fitted or removed when the racks are bayed together,
and in all three applications special panel mountings were designed
to provide maximum space for cables or the thick slides fitted to
the Compaq servers.
