Surface-mountable varistors
from AVX, save space by replacing
three components typically used to protect against transient voltage
spikes: two back-to-back Zener diodes and an EMC capacitor in parallel.
They also offer higher ESD protection and greater current and energy
handling capabilities than diodes, as well as EMI/RFI attenuation
across a wide frequency spectrum.
The CANBus Varistor is a zinc-oxide based ceramic semiconductor
device with nonlinear voltage-current characteristics. It is capable
of handling peak currents of 4A (8x20µs), and displays a failure
rate of less than 0.1 per billion hours. It also features maximum
leakage current of 2µA, maximum capacitance of 22pF at 1MHz,
0.5Vrms, and working voltages of 18Vdc and 14Vac.
Part of AVX's TransGuard line of transient voltage suppression devices,
the CANBus series is available in 0603, 0405 and 0612 case sizes,
and in single-, dual- and quadconfigured packages. It is ideally
suited for high- and low-speed communication bus structures, including
LIN, CAN and J1850, and particularly useful in serving the growing
need for ESD protection in the automotive industry, typically port
protection of CAN network I/Cs, sensors and module protection, LCD
screen protection and Remote Keyless Entry Systems on both the transmitter
and the receiver.
