Tantalum caps eliminate piezo noise in mobile phones

A new range of Tantalum 0805 capacitors introduced by AVX, provides excellent filtering performance in backlighting control of small LCD displays used in mobile phones.

Tantalum cuts piezo noise in mobiles

AVX capacitor

Currently, a 1µF 0805 Multi Layer Chip Ceramic capacitor stabilises the output from the LED driver in all mobile phones, and is used for the 1.0MHz PWM output to support the LEDs. However the two secondary frequencies, 140 Hz and 1.3 KHz, occuring as the LED switches on or off, cause piezo noise on the ceramics.

AVXs TAC Tantalum 0805 devices have been especially developed for this application to operate at frequencies 1.0MHz and below, guaranteeing the user reliable, noise-free operation. The first models incorporating these Tantalums are currently in preproduction with a major European cellular phone manufacturer.
