280% Peak Power from power supply control IC

An integrated power supply control IC with the ability to deliver up to 280% power at peak demands, has been introduced by Power Integrations, leader in high-voltage analogue ICs for power conversion.

POLs offer wide input/output configurationsIC meets occasional peak power demands

TinySwitch-PK is an innovative power IC enabling more simple, more flexible designs employing fewer components than alternative discrete and integrated solutions. Accordingly, the size, weight and cost of designs are significantly reduced. It employs an On/Off control method that is highly efficient, easy to use, and provides an extremely fast transient response; and delivers peak power on-demand.

A typical application for TinySwitch-PK is a consumer products having a seldom-used device such as the drawer mechanism in a DVD player. This requires extra power for short periods, while at all other times much less power is consumed by the hardware. Conventionally, all system components such as transformers, output diodes and bulk storage capacitors, must be specified to cater for that occasional higher power requirement. By contrast, TinySwitch-PK automatically enters a special peak mode at times of peak power requirement, in which it derives up to 280% of the design power level from the same power components.

TinySwitch-PK integrates a 700V MOSFET with low-voltage control circuitry on a monolithic IC and offers auto-restart, input under-voltage and output over-voltage protection, hysteretic thermal shutdown and, to minimize EMI, frequency jittering. Each family member has three optional current limit values without the need for additional pins or external components, so that power supplies may be optimised for highest efficiency or power output.
