KTL helps make Hull the 'Capital of Broadband Technology'

Hull City Council is playing a key role in making the city the Capital of Broadband Technology, thanks to an exciting collaboration with one of the world's leading independent broadband test companies, citybased
KTL. Support and sponsorship has come from major international corporations, and many local companies are also lending their support.

The Digital Home Showcase is an exciting and unique project, which demonstrates how existing technology can be used in their daily lives to link families to the very best in new broadband applications and services not only in Hull, but also across the world.

Steve Kingdom, Global Business Manager at KTL and President of the international DSL Forum, said: "We are delighted that Hull City Council is a key partner in the Digital Home Showcase. We have a long-standing track record in working with private sector partners to deliver cutting-edge solutions."

"This is not the first time Hull City Council has been thinking ahead of its time, as more than 100 years ago the Council created a department delivering cheap telephony to its citizens."

"The major difference between this and other similar projects, is that we are focusing on applications that exploit broadband for the benefit of the community - health, education, quality of life - rather than purely as an alternative means of delivering entertainment."

Other exciting benefits could include council services ranging from housing and council tax benefit applications, to the processing of building repair reports.

Local businesses have built the Digital Home Showcase at KTL's laboratory facility base at Hull Priory Park West. It features a state-ofthe- art kitchen, lounge, teenager's bedroom and home office, and demonstrates the wide range of benefits available through the power of fast and ample broadband bandwidth. Key speakers at its launch included the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and MP for Hull West and Hessle, the Rt Hon Alan Johnson, who said: "On broadband in particular we [Hull] were well ahead, and we are still in a position to make this advantage really count if we build on the biggest asset that Hull has: its partnerships."

Last year KTL won a major contract to provide telecommunications testing for North America's big four telecoms operators, providing a major boost for Hull's Digital City agenda and highlighting the wealth of digital technology expertise in the city.

Steve Kingdom, KTL Global Business Manager, shows Secretatry of State of Trade and Industry and local MP the Rt Hon Alan Johnson the educational benefits of ADSL2plus in the Digital Home Showcase.
