A new and improved series of low-cost,
high-performance resistors from Tyco
Electronics, provides excellent pulse
withstand capabilities for circuitry
associated with surges, high peak power or
high energy - and lightning protection -
while remaining highly stable.
The advanced characteristics of the highly
reliable 0.25W, 250V CBT25, and the 0.5W,
350V CBT50, have been achieved by
selecting materials featuring optimum
physical properties and by new
developments in the manufacturing process.

As a direct replacement for hot moulded carbon composition resistors, the CBT offers
a much higher pulse handling capability.
Since constructed utilising a solid carbon rod
composition, the entire rod conducts
rendering the device perfect for absorbing
high energy pulses. For example, in the
case of a fast, high-energy pulse of
<100mS, the conductive element is required
to withstand all of the energy and absorb all
of the heat generated. However, the very
construction of a film or wire-wound resistor
restricts its energy-handling capability. By
contrast, the higher thermal mass of the
solid carbon resistor provides it with a
substantially higher energy handling
capability.
Affording the benefit of small size, with a
broad range of resistance values and
tolerances, from 1R0 to 5M6 for the CBT25
and 1R0 to 22M for the CBT50, the new CBTSeries
resistor has a very wide operating
temperature range of -55 up to 125°C. The
insulation resistance for both versions is
1000M minimum.
