New IC Family Enables World's Simplest Cell- Phone Chargers

The leader in high-voltage analog integrated circuits for power conversion, Power Integrations, has announced a new family of ICs that enables the design of energy-efficient, low-power and low-cost battery chargers using only 14 components.

Introduced as the LinkSwitch-LP family, it offers the most simple, energyefficient alternative to unregulated linefrequency transformers with up to three watts of output power, which are commonly used with cell phones, cordless phones, portable audio players, shavers and other items of personal electronics.

LinkSwitch-LP eliminates a variety of components and circuitry used in conventional chargers. Typical of these is EMI filtering, for example, which is achieved with a single capacitor; the need for thermal protection components is eliminated; and Eshield transformer design means that no Y capacitor is required. Together with other factors, these circuit economies mean that chargers using LinkSwitch-LP require just 14 components.

LinkSwitch-LP features a 700V power MOSFET integrated with control and fault protection circuitry on a single silicon chip. The ICs operate across the universal input range of 85 to 265Vac and achieve an extremely low no-load power consumption of less than 150mW at 265Vac.

One IC eliminates circuits and components in chargers

The simple ON/OFF control scheme of LinkSwitch-LP provides constant efficiency even at light loads, enabling easy compliance with recent efficiency standards. It is available in leadfree, plastic through-hole DIP 8 and surfacemountable SMD 8 packages.
