RoHS and WEEE toolkit is introduced on CD by eco3

Environmental design consultants eco3, in conjunction with partners Rohm & Haas, Intellect and Indesit, have developed a compliance toolkit on Compact Disc, to assist businesses affected by the Restriction of Hazardous Substances and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment directives, RoHS and WEEE. The UK WEEE Regulations are expected to be passed before the end of November this year, and the UK RoHS Regulations were put in place on 7th October.

The Regulations require the recovery and recycling of products at the end of their life, and will enforce the removal of lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, mercury, and two groups of flame retardants from new electrical and electronic equipment entering the market after June 2006. They therefore present massive challenges for the electronics industry, including manufacturers, brand owners, importers and distributors.

Developed in conjunction with some of the world's largest names in the electronics industry, the Compliance Toolkit has been placed on trial with over 200 affected companies in the UK. A beta version is currently available, though this will be updated once the final UK regulations on WEEE are published.

Contained in The Toolkit are a number of discrete sections, dealing with various aspects of compliance with the directives. These provide an outline of the Directives themselves, together with copies of the regulations, timescales and FAQs, the way in which they will

work in the UK and EC member states, and their possible affect on an individual company. Video interviews with key industry experts are also included in the CD, with DIY Compliance Checklists and a bespoke action planning tool.

However, the most detailed fields of the CD deal with the practical actions that need to be taken in order to comply with both directives. These include financial and legal aspects, the reasoning behind the exclusion of certain hazardous materials, and the identification of alternatives, their sources and selection.

Available to EDi readers at a special discounted price of £249.00, this compact toolkit provides an invaluable guide to every company whose activities may be impacted by the conditions applied in these important items of European legislation.
