New software speeds PSU and transformer design

The market leader in high-voltage ICs for power conversion, Power Integrations Inc, has launched a new version of its popular PI Expert power supply design software, together with a new on-line Rapid Transformer Sample Service (RTSS) for transformer prototyping.

PI Expert is already widely used in the power supply design community; this latest 6.5 Version adds support for all of the products launched by the Company in 2006. It includes PI's latest TinySwitch- III, PeakSwitch, and LinkSwitch-LP products, and automates power supply circuit design, component selection and transformer construction; RTSS trims days from the construction of transformer designs generated by the software, and includes new features such as Bode plots of the feedback network and upgraded transformer design algorithms. By linking PI Expert to the RTSS, the needs of customers without dedicated in-house resources to iterate and optimize transformer prototypes, are addressed. This eliminates one of the most error-prone and time-consuming tasks in power supply design and will accordingly speed a product’s time to market substantially.

Version 6.5 provides a built-in PI product selector guide and offers extended PI device support and component libraries. It also offers three new design optimization features: Control Loop Simulation and Feedback Circuit Calculations, which enable circuit optimizations; and mechanical diagrams in PI Transformer Designer which ensure transformer winding accuracy.

A transformer sits at the heart of every power supply design, affecting operation, safety and EMI performance. PI Expert V6.5 produces winding specifications for the PI Transformer Designer utility using patented EMI-reducing shield-winding algorithms. The transformer output from V6.5 can be submitted to the RTSS for rapid prototyping and delivery. Sample services are available from Power Integrations and ICE Components, and other providers may be added in the future.

This combined new offering from PI both enables OEMs with limited experience in power supply design to prototype their own hardware successfully; and overcomes a critical hurdle for power supply specialists in the rush to re-design products in advance of new energy-efficiency rules coming into effect in 2007.
